Lois Hutch Obituary

Lois Ann (Barry) Hutch of Marlborough, Massachusetts passed away on Monday, June 27, 2022, at the age of 96. She was a good, decent, hardworking woman with a solid moral compass.

She was born on December 14, 1925, in Wellesley, MA. to Vincent and Alice (Murphy) Barry. She attended the Newton Schools and graduated from Newton High School in 1943. Following graduation, she worked for the war effort in manufacturing and then the New England Telephone Company.

She met her future husband at Hampton Beach, NH. In 1949 she married Francis James Hutch of Marlborough. They raised their five children on West Main Street in Marlborough. They were members of the Immaculate Conception Church, the P.T.A., and Boys’ Club board of directors.

Lois left the Telephone Company in 1955 to raise her family but in 1972, she returned to the Company. Her salary was used exclusively to send her five children to colleges. She took great pride in that.

She and Francis retired to Wells, Maine in 1987, where they enjoyed an active life by the seaside. They were members of St. Mary’s Church. She was a member of the St. Mary’s Sodality and the Ogunquit Womens’ Club. In 2014, they returned home to Massachusetts to be closer to family.

Lois was predeceased by her husband Francis, her brother William Barry and her sisters Priscilla Fogarty and Marcia Ash.  She is survived by her five children: Janice Hutch, Barry Hutch and his wife Cheryl, Paula (Hutch) Emino, Jim Hutch and his wife Debbie, and Ted Hutch. She leaves grandchildren: Dan, Nicole, Artie, Lindsey, Meaghan, Jameson and Michael; and three great grandchildren; Ava, Evan and Connor.

Lois loved this poem by Sam Walter Foss and actually recited it last week.

Let me live in my house by the side of the road
Where the race of men go by-
They are good, they are bad, they are weak,  they are strong, Wise, foolish- so am I.
Then why should I sit in the scorner’s seat
Or hurl the cynic’s ban?-
Let me live in my house by the side of the road
And be a friend to man.
